Bellman functions, averages and singular integrals and a non-technical approach to new techniques

Stefanie Petermichl (Brown University)

Abstract: We present various sharp norm estimates for some of the most central objects in harmonic analysis - Calderon Zygmund operators. We discuss their applications, for example to quasiregular maps in the plane as well as related subjects, such as commutators and Carleson embedding theorems. Analysis is the study of complicated objects through its building blocks and its core lies in the creation of new techniques to obtain the desired estimates. We give a non-technical overview of the new methods used.
