Applications of CAT(0) geometry

Robert Ghrist (Department of Mathematics, UIUC)

Abstract: UIUC has a rich history of work in spaces with bounded curvature, along with its applications to group theory (see the works of Profs. Alexander, Bishop, Kapovich, Shupp, and others). I will give a brief introduction to a simple, beautiful class of such spaces --- those whose curvature is bounded above by zero. I will then indicate why these geometric notions are ideal for applications to problems in engineering and computer science.
