#### Congruences for modular forms of weights two and four

###### Scott Ahlgren (UIUC)

Abstract: We discuss congruences between modular forms of weight four and the derivatives of modular forms of weight two.

#### Pairs of matrices generating matrix rings and their presentations

###### Bogdan Petrenko (Texas A&M University)

Abstract: Let M_n(Z) be the ring of n-by-n matrices with integral entries and n \geq 2. This talk considers the set G_n(Z) of pairs of matrices (A,B), with A and B generating M_n(Z) as an algebra. In particular, we have found presentations for M_n(Z) with 2 generators and finitely many relations. (This is joint work with Said Sidki).

#### Elliptic Units, cont.

###### Bill Hart (UIUC Math)

Abstract: (RAP Elliptic Curves and Iwasawa Theory, Part 7)

2:00 pm in 443 Altgeld Hall,Thursday, March 16, 2006

#### A little about the Teichmuller Space of a surface

###### Rosona Eldred (UIUC Math)

Abstract: I will present a gentle introduction to foliations, hyperbolic structures and the Teichmuller space of a surface, proving a few results. Very little background is assumed.

3:00 pm in 243 Altgeld Hall,Thursday, March 16, 2006

#### Peskine-Szpiro's New Intersection Theorem

###### Jason McCullough (UIUC Math)

Abstract: I will present Peskine-Szpiro's proof of the New Intersection Theorem (in characteristic p) and discuss how it relates to the original intersection theorem and related work.
