#### Compactification and Calabi-Yau manifolds

###### Sheldon Katz   [email] (UIUC Math and Physics)

Abstract: "Compactification" refers to consideration of superstring theory in a space K_d x R^(10-d), where K=K_d is a compact d-dimensional manifold (or the bosonic string in K_d x R^(26-d)). This gives rise to an effective quantum field theory in R^(10-d). If K is Calabi-Yau, this quantum field theory is supersymmetric. The parameters of the physical theory are identified with moduli parameters of K, both the classical moduli parameters of algebraic or complex geometry, as well as "quantum moduli" parameters such as the complexified Kahler class.
