Splines and Fat Points

Mike DiPasquale (UIUC Math)

Abstract: We introduce splines over simplicial complexes (an object initially of interest in numerical analysis) and explain a connection to ideals of fat points (studied by algebraic geometers) which was first noted by Iarrabino. A brief explanation of the terms: Splines over a simplicial complex are continuously differentiable functions of some order which restrict to polynomials on each simplex, while ideals of fat points are polynomials which vanish to some order on a prescribed set of points in projective space.
