#### Opportunities at Sandia National Labs

###### Richard O. Griffith (Sandia National Labs)

Abstract: Dr. Griffith will give an introduction to Sandia National Laboratories, with an emphasis on opportunities for internships and postdocs. He will describe the application process, and give some case studies of postdoc and internship experiences at Sandia. He will also discuss current opportunities. Dr. Griffith directs a program on complex systems research at Sandia.

10:00 am in 245 Altgeld Hall,Thursday, December 12, 2013

#### Corporate Forum

1:00 pm in 239 Altgeld Hall,Thursday, December 12, 2013

#### Illinois Geometry Lab Open House

Abstract: The IGL Open House will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Watch the 3D printer in action. See posters from the 13 projects and talk to current IGL scholars to learn about ongoing research and open problems in Mathematics.

2:00 pm in Altgeld Hall,Thursday, December 12, 2013

#### Visualizing symmetry

###### Anton Lukyanenko (343 UIUC Math)

Abstract: I will show pictures, videos, and 3D models illustrating symmetries of various spaces, such as the 3-sphere in C^2 (and the associated Heisenberg group). The talk will focus on the visualizations, but also discuss related research in geometry and dynamical systems.

3:00 pm in 243 Altgeld Hall,Thursday, December 12, 2013

#### Almost purity theorem with applications to the homological conjectures - Part II

###### Kazuma Shimomoto (Meiji University)

Abstract: I will talk about almost purity theorem proved by Davis and Kedlaya with applications to the homological conjectures in local algebra. The almost purity theorem originates from p-adic Hodge theory by Faltings. I will also talk about its brief history and then construct a big Cohen-Macaulay algebra under some special condition.
