#### What is a mock theta function?

###### Nick Andersen (UIUC Math)

Abstract: In his enigmatic “last letter” to Hardy, Ramanujan listed 17 examples of q-series which he called “mock theta functions.” His vague definition left mathematicians wondering for many years: what is a mock theta function? Nowadays, depending on whom you ask, you may get different answers to this question. In my talk, I will attempt to answer this question from the modern perspective, showing how Ramanujan’s mock theta functions fit beautifully into the theory of modular forms.
