What is Algebraic Geometry?

Nathan Fieldsteel (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)

Abstract: Algebraic Geometry is usually described as being the study of the solution sets of systems of polynomial equations. This is not a very helpful description, because it only describes what the subject studies; it leaves out the how and the why. This talk will be a big-picture introduction to algebraic geometry, starting from first principles. Time permitting, we will also demonstrate using the computer algebra system Macaulay2 for computational algebraic geometry.
