Gauss Sums and the Hausdorff-Young inequality

George Shakan (UIUC Math)

Abstract: Here we provide a construction that shows the Hausdorff-Young inequality cannot hold for p > 2. This particular construction is motivated from number theory, in particular the Legendre symbol. I have a post on my blog that goes into much greater detail into what I hope to cover: https://gshakan.wordpress.com/2016/04/25/gauss-sums-and-hausdorff-young/.

A foundational look at entropy and the second law of thermodynamics after Lieb and Yngvason

Mahmood Etedadialiabadi (UIUC)

Abstract: We will go over "A guide to entropy and the second law of thermodynamics" by Elliott H. Lieb and Jakob Yngvason, Notices of the AMS, 1998. This is the forth talk on this topic.
