Determinants, Lattice Paths, and Sign-Reversing Involutions

Cara Monical (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)

Abstract: Certain matrices are known to have positive determinant despite the signs involved in calculating the determinant. The Gessel-Viennot-Lindstrom lemma provides a powerful tool for interpreting the determinant of particular matrices as the generating function for certain families of lattice paths. In this talk, we will discuss this lemma and a range of applications, particularly in algebraic combinatorics.
