#### Smooth Motivating stacks as models for singular spaces

###### Joel Villatoro (UIUC Math)

Abstract: In this talk, I will try to explain why someone studying smooth geometry should be interested in stacks. I will try to give a few simple examples and provide a motivated definition of a stack. Time permitting, I will explain how stacks relate to the more specialized settings of Poisson and Riemannian geometry.

#### Prism tableaux for alternating sign matrix varieties

###### Anna Weigandt   [email] (UIUC Math)

Abstract: A. Lascoux and M. P. Schützenberger showed that the lattice of $n\times n$ alternating sign matrices is closely related to the Bruhat order on the symmetric group; ${\tt ASM}(n)$ is the MacNeille completion of $S_n$. To $A\in {\tt ASM}(n)$ we associate $X_A$, a subvariety of the space of $n\times n$ matrices. When $A=w$ is a permutation matrix, $X_w$ is a matrix Schubert variety. In this case, A. Knutson and E. Miller showed the multidegree of $X_w$ is the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak S_w$. We give a formula for the multidegree of an alternating sign matrix variety as a generating series over prism tableaux, extending joint work with A. Yong.
