Abstract: Community colleges are often the primary pathway to postsecondary education for historically underrepresented and underserved students, particularly underrepresented racial minority students. Two-year institutions are crucial to meeting the demand for URM STEM talent in the U.S. (specifically, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander students). Although URM students are overrepresented in community colleges, they are underrepresented among STEM majors at these institutions with minority serving community colleges (MSCCs) enrolling the vast majority of URMs. Dr. Zamani-Gallaher, Professor of Higher Education/Community College Leadership will share some aspects of work on transitioning students from developmental math as well as discuss how MSCCs are onramps for URMs to pursue STEM fields. Additionally, she will touch on mathematics and whiteness as a field and the need for more relational practices in bolstering racially equitable student outcomes in community college math courses.
