2-parts of class groups in thin families of quadratic fields

Djordjo Milovic   [email] (University College London )

Abstract: The study of 2-parts of class groups of quadratic number fields goes back to Gauss. While he did much work to understand the structure of class groups, Cohen and Lenstra provided a heuristic framework for understanding the average behavior of these groups. We will present results on the distribution of 16-ranks of class groups in certain natural families parametrized by prime numbers, and we will discuss how these results fit into the framework of the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics.
